Divine Nobodies: Shedding Religion to Find God (and the unlikely people who help you)

What does a Hip-Hop artist, Waffle House waitress, tire salesman, and disabled girl have to do with discovering spiritual truth? What if embracing authentic Christianity is a journey of unlearning? Welcome to Jim Palmer's world!

Don Miller meets Anne Lamott meets Brian McLaren in this tale of shedding religion and plunging into uncharted depths of knowing God. Jim Palmer, emergent pastor, shares his compelling off-road spiritual journey and the unsuspecting people who became his guides.

"Perhaps God's reason for wanting me," writes Palmer, "is much better than my reason for wanting him. Maybe God's idea of my salvation trumps the version I am too willing to settle for. Seeing I needed a little help to get this, God sent a variety pack of characters to awaken me." For all those hoping there's more to God and Christianity than what they've heard or experienced, each chapter of Divine Nobodies gives the reader permission and freedom to discover it for themselves. Sometimes comical, other times tragic, at times shocking, always honest; Jim Palmer's story offers an inspiring and profound glimpse into life with God beyond institutional church and conventional religion.

"I am tempted to say that Jim Palmer could well be the next Donald Miller, but what they have in common, along with an honest spirituality and extraordinary skill as storytellers, is a unique voice . . . Divine Nobodies is a delight to read, and it was good for my soul to read it."

"You hold in your hands an amazing story of a broken man finding freedom in all the right places-in God's work in the lives of some extraordinarily ordinary people around him. You will thrill to this delightful blend of gut-wrenching honesty and laugh-out-loud hilarity, and in the end you'll find God much closer, the body of Christ far bigger and your own journey far clearer than you ever dreamed."

The Dog Diet, A Memoir: What My Dog Taught Me About Shedding Pounds, Licking Stress and Getting a New Leash on Life
Boy does Ms. Lawson know dogs! Fantastic book for dog lovers and anyone who wants to stay in shape and lighten up their lives to boot!
--Richard Simmons

We live in a diet-obsessed age, when we lose five pounds just to gain ten, delude ourselves that the next exercise contraption we buy from that midnight infomercial will finally take that extra inch off our thighs, and become convinced that the latest diet fad of beet soup and goat's milk will help us look good in a bikini. But now you can forget the Zone, Atkins and South Beach! It turns out that the ultimate weight-loss plan is owning a dog: Man (and woman's) best friend is the fail proof personal trainer-dietician-nutritionist you've been looking for you all your life.

That's just what Patti Lawson found in her dog, Sadie.

A diet-obsessed, single lawyer, Patti spent the winter indulging in multiple brands of chocolate while mourning the demise of her latest relationship. Spring found her pudgy and pitiful, when Fate - and a fortuitous trip to PetSmart - brought rascally puppy Sadie into Patti's petless, pristine, if a bit sterile, life. Since that day life hasn't been the same for Patti or Sadie.

A life that began together with 3:00 a.m. walks through the park, incessant barking and stolen moments of trying to eat just a crumb of breakfast without puppy-interference soon morphed into a partnership of exercise and healthy eating with the added bonus that Sadie taught Patti a thing or two about letting go and stopping to smell the roses.

A memoir-cum-diet, The Dog Diet takes a tongue-in-cheek look at our obsession with weight loss and will have you laughing out loud as you recognize your own dysfunctional relationship with food. In the process you'll learn a simple and natural method for shedding unwanted pounds without the usual stress and disappointments that go along with typical dieting regimens.

  • Demystifying Wall Street: Shedding a little light on the BULL!
This is the book that Wall Street doesn't want you to read. It's a book about my experiences, my insights, and my take on the brokerage business. As a top-producing Wall Street stockbroker for 20 years at some of its largest firms, I had the opportunity to see everything - the junkets, the incentives, the sales strategies, the product preferences, and most of all how customers are treated. Demystifying Wall Street begins with some of my personal experiences, how I went from being a car salesman (and musician) to joining one of Wall Street's biggest brokerages. And then it explains how I discovered that car dealerships and brokerages operate in very much the same way: by incentives. More compelling, the book reveals a perspective that is often lost on consumers: Salesmen, whether of stocks or cars, are paid to sell products. They work, at the end of the day, for the manufacturers of those products and therefore their interests are never aligned with buyers. Those buyers on Wall Street are you. This is the flaw in the Wall Street business model that is at the crux of Demystifying Wall Street. Despite the bull, the advertisements, and all of the lip service, stockbrokers can never be the trusted advisers they portend to be. If they were, and put clients' interests ahead of their own, they'd be broke. Yet, the average income of stockbrokers is several hundred thousand dollars and can stretch up into millions of dollars. I explain how this then translates into a lifestyle trap for Wall Street stockbrokers, how they have to produce, produce, produce, to keep up their means. It shows how bigger and better EVERYTHING is rewarded by brokerage firm management. Managers want brokers to get nicer cars, buy bigger houses. They hold out carrots at the office too - corner offices, secretaries, and trips - all in a design to keep brokers in the firm's nest. Rife with information, including charts, tables, and graphs, Demystifying Wall Street is meant to be used as resource guide, a resource guide, mind you, that tells a story. My personal experiences and anecdotes are meant to grab readers' attention and engage them. But the book itself is full of easy-to-understand financial lessons..

Shedding Light on Genetically Engineered Food: What You Don’t Know About the Food You’re Eating and What You Can Do to Protect Yourself
The evidence is clear and overwhelming: genetically engineered food is big business, a profitable product on the global market, and as a $6.15 billion industry in 2006, its growth and corporate power are undeniable Despite the United States government and biotechnology industry’s assertion that genetically engineered food is harmless, Americans must question its safety. The truth is that genetically engineered food has never been tested for human consumption.

When genetically engineered food was introduced in America more than a decade ago, it was promoted as a solution to some of the world’s food problems; however, the promised advantages have never been realized. Beth H. Harrison, PhD, explores why these crops do not benefit consumers, do not feed the world, do not help the environment, and are not rigorously regulated. Yet the government and the biotechnology industry expend questionable efforts to “educate” consumers, the media, and politicians with propaganda championing genetically engineered food as safe and necessary. Meanwhile, an unsuspecting public continues to be force-fed untested, unlabeled food that carries potential adverse health effects.

Harrison provides a convincing argument as to why American consumers must question the collusion between their government and the biotechnology industry: their health—and yours—depends on it.

Anger Among Angels: Shedding Light on the Darkness of the Human Soul
This provocative book explores the dark side of the soul inherent in every human being and explains how to channel it to prevent the pervasive violence in our society.

Bill DeFoore shows us why the only way to address the violence, cruelty and perpetration of harm in the world around us is to first traverse the dark dimension of our own soul. He explores anger from a spiritual perspective and shows us that, in order to be whole and healthy, we must confront and accept the shadow personality inherent in us all.

Drawing on historical events, popular culture and the true experiences of his clients, DeFoore weaves a compelling and sometimes unnerving look at the dark side. By exploring this meeting place between good and evil, he explains the natural roots of anger and why it emerges as rage in people, but is channeled in healthy ways in others. He reveals the precursors to toxic anger as well as the symptoms that show when someone is being overcome by it, which can serve as warning signals for anyone concerned.

With the alarming incidents of rage and violence on our highways and in the workplace and schools, this is a much-needed resource for parents, educators, mental health professionals and anyone concerned with the welfare of society..

Shedding Light on His Dark Materials: Exploring Hidden Spiritual Themes in Philip Pullman's Popular Series
Best selling authors of Finding God in the Lord of the Rings Kurt Bruner and Jim Ware team up again in a study of Philip Pullman's popular His Dark Materials fantasy series. Unlike authors such as J. R. R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis, Pullman writes from an intentionally anti-Christian perspective. As the authors explore Pullman's themes, characters, and charges against Christianity, they ultimately conclude that though Pullman intended to do just the opposite, he has created a cosmos that seems to confirm the existence of a loving God--one where truth wins out over deception, grace trumps the virtue of self-reliance, and relationship is prized above independence. Released in conjunction with the major feature film, Shedding Light on His Dark Materials will equip parents, teachers, and readers to better understand and respond to Pullman's brilliant but troubling work..

    Shedding and Literally Dreaming

This volume brings together prose from three decades of writing by Verena Stefan, one of the most influential contemporary feminist writers in the world.

The original 1975 German publication of Shedding-a novella that narrates the radical transformation of a young woman against the backdrop of the early 1970s women's, civil rights, and health care movements-created such a stir that the work has been hailed as "the feminist equivalent to Mao's little red book." To date, over 300,000 copies of Shedding have been sold in Germany. Included here is the first English translation of Literally Dreaming, a delightful collection of eight stories written in the 1980s, drawing a portrait of life as the narrator of Shedding may have envisioned it-women living together in natural and rural settings, independent of men. Stefan has written for this volume a new essay, "Euphoria and Cacophony," which traces the extraordinary reception-and backlash-that greeted Shedding in the 1970s, and the effect on her both as a writer and as a symbol of the German women's movement.

In resonant prose, and with a refreshing honesty, Stefan speaks to the universality of women's lives, a concept popular in the 1970s and 1980s, and ripe for re-discussion now in the 1990s. Stefan was a pioneer in "experimental writing" before the phrase was coined, and her writing about women's lives is as immediate today as when it first exploded on the German literary scene.
