From the author: Many manufacturing processes have, by nature, Multiple Input and Multiple Output (MIMO) variables. However, despite its frequent use in practice, MIMO process feedback control has not been fully investigated in the literature. Under a linear MIMO model, this paper proposes a Multivariate Exponentially Weighted Moving Average (MEWMA) controller. The stability conditions of this controller and the feasible region of its associated discount factor are derived. A discount factor which minimizes the total Mean Square Error (MSE) of the process output is obtained under the assumption that the process disturbance is either a white noise series or an IMA(1, 1) series. An example is given to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed method. Some related issues are also discussed.

Economic design of EWMA control charts using regions of maximum and minimum ARL.(exponentially weighted moving average): An article from: IIE Transactions

From the author: Nowadays, it is common to find industries that utilize processes that either have a value of the process capability index [C.sub.pk] larger than two or are very difficult to adjust. In these cases, the detection of very small shifts may not be of interest due to the possible extra variability introduced into the process by the detection process. It would be more interesting in these situations to decide what shift size is important for detection, and to design a chart capable of quickly detecting this shift whilst having a low probability of false alarms for the shifts that we do not wish to detect. The Exponentially Weighted Moving Average (EWMA) control chart, although originally developed to successfully detect small shifts, can be designed to cope with these requirements. This paper presents a method for the economic-statistical design of EWMA charts for control processes, in which the detection of small shifts is not necessary, and which is, at the same time, effective in detecting important shifts. A genetic algorithm is used to optimize the design. A sensitivity analysis of the optimal solution is performed to determine the influence of certain factors on the economic model.

Modified Shewhart-exponentially weighted moving average control charts.: An article from: IIE Transactions
This digital document is an article from IIE Transactions, published by Institute of Industrial Engineers, Inc. (IIE) on December 1, 1997. The length of the article is 3374 words. The page length shown above is based on a typical 300-word page. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Digital Locker immediately after purchase. From the author: A modified Shewhart-exponentially weighted moving average X-bar statistical control scheme is evaluated. It is characterized by the use of a Shewhart component requiring two (or more) plotted points beyond reduced width (i.e., less than three-sigma) control limits to give an out-of-control signal. Schemes with both better average run length profiles and better early false-signal characteristics than those associated with standard Shewhart-runs rules schemes are suggested.
