Uncommon Places: The Complete Works
Published by Aperture in 1982 and long unavailable, Stephen Shore's legendary Uncommon Places has influenced a generation of photographers Among the first artists to take color beyond advertising and fashion photography, Shore's large-format color work on the American vernacular landscape stands at the root of what has become a vital photographic tradition. Uncommon Places: The Complete Works presents a definitive collection of the original series, much of it never before published or exhibited. Like Robert Frank and Walker Evans before him, Shore discovered a hitherto unarticulated version of America via highway and camera. Approaching his subjects with cool objectivity, Shore's images retain precise internal systems of gestures in composition and light through which the objects before his lens assume both an archetypal aura and an ambiguously personal importance. In contrast to Shore's signature landscapes with which "Un-common Places" is often associated, this expanded survey reveals equally remarkable collections of interiors and portraits. As a new generation of artists expands on the projects of the New Topographic and New Color photographers of the seventies--Thomas Struth (whose first book was titled Unconscious Places), Andreas Gursky, and Catherine Opie among them-- Uncommon Places: The Complete Works provides a timely opportunity to reexamine the diverse implications of Shore's project and offers a fundamental primer for the last thirty years of large-format color photography. Essay by Stephan Schmidt-Wulffen. Interview by Lynne Tillman. Hardcover, 12.75 x 10.5 in./188 pgs / 162 color and 7 b&w..

Matt Mullican: Model Architecture (Emanating)
Matt Mullican is a multimedia artist in the broadest sense, ranging from these fragile models to bulky sculptures, from reliefs to drawings, collages, light boxes, computer animations, glass works, video and performances. The system of pictograms for which he first gained renown has served him well in addressing systematization and subjectivity, and in laying out the cosmology that preoccupies him most. His models, miniature houses, amphitheaters and abstracted structures in paper, glass, textiles, ceramics, wood and video help to place him and the idea of home in that same cosmology. They aren't plans for any larger realization; they are just ideas of spaces and environments, conveying relationships between concepts. Model Architecture offers an overview of their diverse forms and formats, and, in an interview between Allan McCollum and the artist, a sense of their crucial place in Mullican's oeuvre..

Amelie Von Wulffen
German artist Amelie von Wulffen accomplished her breakthrough into the international art scene with presentations at the 50th Venice Biennale and Manifesta 5. Von Wulffen explores collective memory through her vast works on paper--collages, drawings, and photographic overlays--which are the products of her experiments in biographical investigation and reconstruction. In some of her works Von Wulffen spans an imaginary web of coordinates between her grandmother, Solchenizin, and John Travolta, connecting them by traumatic spaces such as ruins and her own objects of memory. Consistently emphasizing the historical dimensions of her autobiographical experience, von Wulffen appropriates avant-garde techniques in her poetic blending of divergent realities. From the artist's early series to her most recent works, Amelie von Wulffen is a thorough examination of an astoundingly complex and extensive oeuvre..
