Awesome Woolman Album and Music Offers

The Beautiful Soul of John Woolman, Apostle of Abolition
A biography of the famous eighteenth-century Quaker whose abolitionist fervor and spiritual practice made him a model for generations of Americans John Woolman (1720–72) was perhaps the most significant American of his age, though he was not a famous politician, general, or man of letters, and never held public office. A humble Quaker tailor in New Jersey, he became a prophetic voice for the entire Anglo-American world when he denounced the evils of slavery in Quaker meetings, then in essays and his Journal, first published in 1774. In this illuminating new biography, Thomas P. Slaughter goes behind those famous texts to locate the sources of Woolman’s political and spiritual power.  Slaughter’s penetrating work shows how this plainspoken mystic transformed himself into a prophetic, unforgettable figure. Devoting himself to extremes of self-purification—dressing only in white, refusing to ride horses or in horse-drawn carriages—Woolman might briefly puzzle people; but his preaching against slavery, rum, tea, silver, forced labor, war taxes, and rampant consumerism was infused with a benign confidence that ordinary people could achieve spiritual perfection, and this goodness gave his message persuasive power and enduring influence. Placing Woolman in the full context of his times, Slaughter paints the portrait of a hero—and not just for the Quakers, social reformers, labor organizers, socialists, and peace advocates who have long admired him. He was an extraordinary original, an American for the ages.

The Journal and Major Essays of John Woolman
In the latter part of the eighteenth century the Quaker minister John Woolman journeyed and preached throughout the American colonies. His Journal, a recognized American classic, portrays an ethical sensitivity comparable to St. Francis of Albert Schweitzer; and his keen sense of social injustice speaks directly to our affluent and increasingly divided mass society. Woolman's essays widely influenced social thought in the United States, and in England as well, where he was esteemed by Lamb and Coleridge.

Professor Moulton's edition of Woolman's major works - based on a thorough examination of all relevant manuscripts in America and Britain - is the first to reflect Woolman's final intentions with fidelity and scholarly accuracy.

Only this edition of the Journal includes Woolman's whole discussion of tax refusal as a form of anti-war protest and civil disobedience. Also included are "A Plea for the Poor" and "Considerations on Keeping Negroes" one of the earliest attacks on slavery.

The present volume includes an introduction by the editor, a chronology and glossary, biographical notes, an annotated bibliography, detailed notes on the text, appendices, and an index..

Harvard Classics, Vol. 01: Benjamin Franklin, John Woolman, William Penn

The choice of Franklin-s Autobiography, containing account of his journey of self-education as the cornerstone of the Harvard Classics demonstrates Charles Eliot-s mission in creating the five-foot shelf of books: -to afford a good substitute for a liberal education to anyone who would read them with devotion.-

Exemplifying the inner life of the Society of Friends, Woolman-s Journal also formed part of his crusade against slavery that would only be realized 150 years later.

The Fruits of Solitude of the founder of Pennsylvania published anonymously so as not to be reimprisoned for disloyalty epitomize the simple Quaker truths upon which the Republic would be based.

Type In Motion: Innovations in Digital Graphics
Exploding, liquidizing, floating, mutating--the use of type today knows no boundaries Words on paper have become pictures in themselves, rather than simply segments of sentences In the popular mediums of television and film, designers today paint moving pictures with words.

Type in Motion features projects in video, film, mixed media, digital and event print that are thematically grouped into five sections by the way the kinetic type is used: its precursors; its narrative function; its message potential; its plastic form; and its possibilities for ambient, interactive environments. The work of internationally recognized design studios including Bruce Mau (Toronto), Jonathan Barnbrook (London), and the MIT Media Lab (Boston) are shown alongside the most daring student work from around the world.

A dynamic design in itself, Type in Motion will set the standard for the future of typography and design.

A Near Sympathy: The Timeless Quaker Wisdom of John Woolman
John Woolman---the eighteenth-century Quaker whose faith and practice is brilliantly explored in this book---is not especially well-known, but he surely belongs on any short list of God-inspired exemplars whose stories can light our dark age. In an era when we are divided, Woolman shows us how to walk across those lines. In an era when we are impatient to act with force, Woolman proves taht history can be altered with patient non-violence. In an era when we are sometimes near despair, Woolman incarnates well-grounded hope. Michael Birkel has rendered a great service by telling John Woolman's story so well. I pray that many will read, ponder, and act on the insights he shares in this book."
