Awesome Wenders Album and Music Offers

Hesiod and Theognis (Penguin Classics): Theogony, Works and Days, and Elegies
Together the poetry of Hesiod and Theognis offers a superb introduction to the life and thought of ancient Greece. Hesiod's Theogoney (c. 725 BCE) is a powerful creation myth: an epic, bloody tale of dark forces, sex and violence, tracing the history of the world from primeval Chaos to the establishment of Zeus as supreme king of the gods. In contrast, Hesiod's Works and Days, written to advise his indolent brother Perseus, is an intriguing, sophisticated combination of ethical maxims, social and political comment and superstitious law. Elegiac rather than epic, the works of Theognis - written some two centuries after Hesiod - include theological speculations, love lyrics and moral advice for his protagonist Kurnos, reflecting the moods and themes of an aristocratic poet who mourned a changing Greek society..

ADHD: Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in Children, Adolescents, and Adults
Paul Wender began his career treating children with ADHD 37 years ago and has treated adults with the disorder for almost 30 years. His exhaustive research and insight gained from clinical practice led to the first book about ADHD in children (Minimal Brain Dysfunction in Children, 1971). Continuing research revealed that in many instances ADHD persisted into adult life, and that adult ADHD included symptoms that were not present in childhood. These findings resulted in his 1995 book Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in Adults. He also authored the first book for the parents of children with ADHD, The Hyperactive Child in 1974. Now, in this revised and updated edition of ADHD he presents the definitive resource on Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. In his discussion of ADHD treatments, Wender stresses that drug therapy remains the most effective in treating the disorder. He adds, however, that psychological techniques, when combined with medication, can produce further improvement. Most important, Wender offers practical--and extensive--instructions on how parents of an ADHD sufferer can best help their child. Throughout, Wender supplies extensive case histories of children and adolescents with ADHD, as well as accounts of the experience of ADHD in adults as perceived by both patients and their families. In addition, the book contains valuable information on where to seek help, as well as on the kinds of diagnostic tests currently available. Finally, in an appendix to the volume, the author includes instructions on how adults can self-screen for the disorder. Now a classic work, ADHD grants parents and adults whose lives have been touched by this disorder an indispensable source of help, hope, and understanding..

Ghost Towns of the American West
Droves of treasure hunters raided the deserts and crags of the American West during the mid-19th century hoping to make a fortune in gold, silver, and copper. Of the thousands of mining towns that sprang up, most have disappeared from the map, but a scant few remain as spooky reminders of dreams that failed. Each year, visitors from around the world journey to these ghost towns--some resembling Hollywood movie sets, complete with tumbleweeds, howling winds, and swinging saloon doors; others no more than a few ruins in a secluded area accessible only by four-wheel drive--to experience firsthand the lure of history frozen in time.

Commissioned by Smithsonian Magazine, award-winning photographer Berthold Steinhilber sought out these phantom towns throughout the West. He probed into the mysteries of deserted places like Bodie, California; Gold Point, Nevada; and Steins, New Mexico, in order to reveal the region's boom-and-bust legacy. Shooting at dusk, using long exposures and a powerful headlamp, he created an eerie ambiance in his photographs of 19 of the most intriguing ghost towns, capturing their lost secrets for all to see..

Pictures from the Surface of the Earth
Globetrotting filmmaker Wim Wenders always takes his old panorama camera with him, using it whenever the sheer wealth of what he sees and the impression it leaves on him breaks the normal scale of things. Infinite landscapes, endless horizons, deserts, and mountain ranges overwhelm by their emptiness and silence, street fronts in Havana, Houston, Berlin, or Jerusalem offer deep insights into the shallows of civilization. Wenders’ photographs are pictures of a world almost devoid of humans, a natural or man-made world viewed from a distance. They shed light on the many guises the surface of the earth dons and attest to Wenders’ contemplative and amazed gaze. This gaze, of course, didn’t stop at September 11 and delivered haunting photos of Ground Zero taken shortly after the attack. With poetic comments by the artist on all the pictures, the book is both a portrait of the world as encountered by the photographer and a portrait of the photographer as reflected in his vision of the world..

Isabella Rossellini: Looking At Me: On Pictures and Photographs
Isabella Rossellini: Looking at Me: On Pictures and Photographers

Self-reflections by stars are a tricky matter. Not, though, if the stars are Isabella Rossellini, her "Me Wall" and her private collection of Isabella portraits taken by the world’s leading photographers. Commented by herself with wit, humor, and self-irony, Looking at Me traces her remarkable career from boxing reporter in Muhammad Ali’s training camp to a highly successful model to movie actress and head of her own cosmetics line. We also meet Isabella in private, with her children, her dog Macaroni, and Spanky, her pig.

Virtually the entire range of star photographers, from Richard Avedon to Bruce Weber, as well as film-makers David Lynch and Wim Wenders have been inspired by Isabella’s charm and versatility. She, in turn, has composed a witty book that is irresistible to the viewer/reader..

Understanding Depression: A Complete Guide to Its Diagnosis and Treatment
Recent studies have found that one woman in five, and one man in ten, will suffer from depression or manic depression sometime during the course of their lives. This is a disturbing statistic, but there is hope, because more and more evidence has surfaced to indicate that many psychiatric disorders are biological diseases that can be successfully treated with medication. Most people, however, know little about these recent findings. They don't know how to tell if the depression they are suffering from is biological or not, nor what they can do to recover from it if it is.
In Understanding Depression, Donald Klein and Paul Wender offer a definitive guide to depressive illness--its causes, course, and symptoms. They clarify the difference between depression (which is a normal emotion) and biological depression (which is an illness), and include several self-rating tests with which readers can determine whether or not they should seek psychiatric evaluation to determine if they have a biological depressive illness. They describe the symptoms of biological depression, among them loss of energy, changes in eating habits, sleep disturbances, decreased sex drive, restlessness, poor concentration and indecisiveness, and increased use of intoxicants and drugs. And they paint a clear picture of how depressive illness can affect people's lives, using excerpts from patient histories to show the progress of each patient from the onset of depression to treatment and recovery. The authors also discuss the different types of treatment available, including antidepressant drugs, electroconvulsive therapy, and psychotherapy, and they examine the benefits and side effects of psychopharmacological drugs (including the new antidepressants, lithium, and the controversial Prozac), related disorders (such as panic attacks, atypical depression, seasonal affective disorder, and PMS), and how to get the right kind of help.
Most victims of biological depression often fail to seek help, whether out of guilt or ignorance, and many are often misdiagnosed by physicians or psychotherapists who fail to recognize the symptoms of the illness. Understanding Depression seeks to make the public (both lay and medical) aware of the issues of biological depression, providing a highly informed and readable guide to this much misunderstood disease..
