An Elegant Madness: High Society in Regency England
Rakes and dandies, duchesses and courtesans, pugilists and patrons, whirl through this dazzling and definitive history of Great Britain's most decadent era. The Regency period was one of the most turbulent ages in British history, one that spanned the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars, that witnessed unprecedented industrial progress, artistic accomplishment, and violent social unrest and--paradoxically-- the most sparkling social scene English high society has ever enjoyed. Under the influence of the obese, loose-moraled Prince of Wales (to whom Jane Austen dedicated Emma), the Regency was the apex of British decadence, an era of lavish parties and relentless bed-hopping that set a standard for elegance and vulgarity. With wit and lively style, Venetia Murray chronicles the scandals, courtships, and daily life of these aristocrats, and evokes the tempestuous times of the early industrial and French revolutions. Sumptuously illustrated with rare contemporary cartoons, prints, diaries, and caricatures, An Elegant Madness is a book readers of social history and historical romance alike will devour. "Glittering and gossipy, an extravagant panorama of the 'Age of Scandal' . . . frivolously entertaining and assiduously researched."-- Kirkus Reviews"A delightful book, well researched and highly entertaining."--Christopher Hibbert, author of George III: A Personal History"A treat. . . . Murray's gusto is giddily infectious. . . . She writes in the amused style that would easily have befit that Regency scribe Jane Austen herself."-- Mary Elizabeth Williams, Salon Magazine.

Word Into Art: Artists of the Modern Middle East
The exhibition and accompanying book highlight the contemporary art of the Middle East. The works selected which come largely from the collection of the British Museum are published here for the first time. They reflect issues of identity and politics and the rich artistic heritage of the region. One of the underlying themes is various artists' engagement with Arabic as script and language. For some this resonates with the sacred tradition of Islam and Qur'an. For others the Arabic script, whatever their language, is an inalienable part of their inheritance, influencing their identity as artists and intellectuals. The exhibition will demonstrate the variety and power of the ways in which artists of the Middle East have sought to express subjective and political truths through a medium that they themselves have transformed. In doing so they have created new genres owing much to international artistic schools of the 20th and 21st centuries but unmistakably informed by views of their own artistic traditions. The book, like the exhibition, will look at these works under the following headings: Sacred Script; Art Calligraphy; Artists and Poets; Deconstructing the Word; and Politics and Identity. It will explain the context of the works and provide translations of texts where appropriate..

Arabic Calligraphy: Naskh Script for Beginners
Naskh is one of the six major cursive Arabic scripts Its origins can be traced back to the late eighth century AD and it is still in use today, over 1300 years later. In its earliest from Naskh was a utilitarian script, mainly used for ordinary correspondence on papyrus, but during the tenth and eleventh centuries it was completely transformed by the elegant refinements of the great Abbasid calligraphers. The Ottoman Turks also considered Naskh the script most suited for copying the Quran. Today, more Qurans are copied in Naskh throughout the Islamic world than in all other Arabic scripts combined. For centuries, novice Arabic calligraphers have learned the skills of this noble art by practising writing Naskh first, a tradition that continues today. This introductory workbook now makes it possible for everyone to learn and enjoy the beauty of Arabic calligraphy. Based on his experience of running workshops and demonstrations, Mustafa Ja'far has distilled the basics into an easy-to-follow, teach-yourself guide..
