Conditions: Snoehetta : Architecture, Interior, Landscape
Snoehetta, one of Scandinavia’s leading architecture practices, seeks to develop its architectures within a continuous state of reinvention Every project differs – only elementary aspects related to a broad sense of context generate core discussions when developing early concepts. Every architect is an individual – only referring her or himself to the social context of Snoehetta generates core values of communal thinking. The projects are examples of attitudes rather than designs. They are samples rather than products. They are associative rather than symbolic. They are comments rather than statements. The book describes the collective methods used when exercising the search for solutions to complex realities and shows Snoehetta’s architecture as a self-referential art within the uncertainties generated by the influence of our contemporary society. Projects like the library of Alexandria, the new opera house in Oslo or the Ras al Khaima gateway exemplify the intentions of the architects and give a hint of how they comment on given preconditions. .

Still Standing: A Century Of Urban Train Station Design (Railroads Past and Present)
This beautiful photographic collection of urban train station design covers a 100-year period from roughly 1850 to 1950. Striking original photographs chronicle 40 large passenger station buildings still in existence in cities around the world. From the great terminals of London, across the world to Auckland, New Zealand; from Toronto’s Union Station to the grand and crumbling Retiro Station in Buenos Aires—vastly different architectural forms are displayed and presented chronologically. One-third of the stations included are among the best America has to offer. Still Standing: A Century of Urban Train Station Design outlines the history and development of large urban stations throughout the Western world. The basic physical forms and their evolution are reviewed in the context of the rapid growth of train travel. Christopher Brown discusses the arrival and impact of Beaux-Arts architecture in the 1890s and its profound effect on the American terminal. The end of the so-called golden era of passenger rail travel coincided with an architectural move away from the classicism of Beaux-Arts. New and different design forms appeared while passengers defected to other means of transportation. These dazzling public structures have endured, but the photographs imply a disturbing question: How long will they survive?.

2G 27 Tunon & Mansilla, International Architecture Review (2G, 27)
2G 27 Mansilla + Tuñón. Known until recently for such public facilities as the Zamora Municipal Museum, the Castellón Fine Arts Museum and the León Auditorium, over the last few years Mansilla + Tuñón have developed a number of projects in which urban scale and the problems of inhabiting in the contemporary city assume more and more importance. In this issue of 2G we present the (almost) complete works of these Madrid architects, works grouped around the basic ideas which define their projects, namely memory and the city, system and restrictions, sameness and difference, and lastly trace and landscape. These concepts are not watertight entities, however, but are present in each and every one of their designs as intersecting references, and they enable us to dissect the architects' way of thinking and influencing reality. Similarly, the articles accompanying the presentation of their buildings scrutinise in kaleidoscopic form the modus operandi of their work. 30 x 23 cm 144 pp pages illustrated in colour text: english/español Quarterly ISBN: 84·252·1934·5.

Bernard Tschumi
Bernard Tschumi is a border crosser in the field of contemporary architecture. Equally present in Europe and the United States, he laid the cornerstone for his influential body of work two decades ago with a project that combines architecture and landscape architecture, theory and practice: the Parc de la Villette in Paris. Dean of the Columbia Graduate School of Architecture in New York for many years and the author of numerous books on architectural theory, Tschumi possesses a body of work that is presented here in overview for the first time. His current projects include a high-rise apartment building in New York, the Zénith Concert Hall in Limoges, and the new Acropolis Museum in Athens. Gilles de Bure, the author of numerous architectural publications on Jean Nouvel, Dominique Perrault, Christian de Portzamparc, and others, presents an in-depth analysis of Tschumi’s work. .
