Philadelphia Chickens
What an event! What a show! It's catchy and quirky. Tuneful and toe-tapping Exuberant, unexpected, and utterly endearing. It's what happens when you take America's beloved illustrator and children's author and combine her buoyant genius with some of the most talented people on the stage—presenting Philadelphia Chickens! Created by Sandra Boynton, Philadelphia Chickens is a family musical in a book, bringing together a full-color songbook of 17 1/2 illustrated story-poems with a full-length, fully orchestrated CD of original songs performed by the likes of Patti LuPone, Kevin Kline, Meryl Streep, The Bacon Brothers, and Laura Linney, who pleads "Please, Can I Keep It?"—it followed me home. / What exactly it is/ I don't know. Also joining in are Eric Stoltz, Natasha Richardson, Scott Bakula, and two Boyntons, including daughter Caitlin McEwan, who performs a piece that every little listener will relate to—a love song to the chocolate chip cookies that are just out of reach. With the collaboration of composer Michael Ford (known to Boynton fans from Rhinoceros Tap), Philadelphia Chickens is that rarest of kids' musical discs—one whose inimitable lyrics and music make it as sing-along, dance-along, cluck-along for parents as it is for their children..

On Playing the Flute
Johann Joachim Quantz's On Playing Flute has long been recognized as one of the most significant and in-depth treatises on eighteenth-century musical thought, performance practice, and style. This classic text of Baroque music instruction goes far beyond an introduction to flute methods by offering a comprehensive program of studies that is equally applicable to other instruments and singers. The work is comprised of three interrelated essays that examine the education of the solo musician, the art of accompaniment, and forms and style. Quantz provides detailed treatment of a wide range of subjects, including phrasing, ornamentation, accent, intensity, tuning, cadenzas, the role of the concertmaster, stage deportment, and techniques for playing dance movements. Of special interest is a table that relates various tempos to the speed of the pulse, which will help today's musicians solve the challenge of playing authentic performance tempos in Baroque music. This edition includes 224 musical examples from Quantz's original text and features a new introduction by translator Edward R. Reilly that considers recent scholarship on Quantz's significant role in eighteenth-century musical activity. On Playing the Flute vividly conveys the constancy of musical life over time and remains a valuable guide for contemporary musicians..

101 Fingerlicking Good Fingerstyle Guitar Accompaniment Patterns
TAB, standard notation, performance notes, all licks recorded on CD. This book is loaded with neat ideas. Fingerstyle guitar playing is a unique experience that allows the guitarist to explore the full range of the instrument s emotional spectrum. Perhaps that is why this versatile style appeals to all age groups and music tastes. Here you will learn 101 interesting and varied fingerstyle accompaniment patterns that are suitable for students, teachers, and working musicians. The patterns, which range from very easy to intermediate in difficulty, cover a wide variety of sounds applicable to popular music, folk, blues, country, and gospel guitar. Because this is a collection not a graded method it is not necessary to work through the examples in chronological order. Simply find a pattern you like on the CD and try playing it on your guitar. If the chosen pattern is too difficult, save it for later and try another one now. You will soon find that this sort of exploration is both fun and instructional. A lot of fingerpicking accompaniment books make the error of showing all patterns in a fixed chord position, but this is not actually how we fingerpick in real life. Thus, a number of the examples here have moving notes that add interesting motion to the basic harmony. Each pattern is played four times at a moderate tempo on the companion CD. A drum count-off helps the user begin playing with the recorded pattern on the correct beat. The patterns would appeal to any guitarist who enjoys listening to artists like James Taylor, John Denver, Merle Travis, Chet Atkins, the Indigo Girls, Mississippi John Hurt (although this is not strictly a blues book; for that, please see my 101 Mississippi Delta Blues Cottonpicking Guitar Licks), Peter, Paul and Mary, roots music, soft-to medium rock. It s a great book for any guitar player who just feels like noodling around with some new ideas. Finally, the book contains a helpful essay, supplemented with examples, entitled Chord Theory 101. This section of the book will help the beginner with the rudiments of basic chord theory, chord embellishment, and the art of applying fingerstyle guitar accompaniments to real songs. Overall, an excellent fingerpicking guitar reference book, and an excellent value. Prerequisite Ability - Early intermediate or better fingerstyle guitar player.
